In this reading I was shocked at how much realization was triggered in my own mind. I’ve never really considered or even allowed the thought of the purposes for a secondary education to run course through my mind. I can recall saying and actually believing that high school was somewhat a waste of time. To me it was like the governments way of “day caring” us throughout the business day. Not that I thought getting an education was bad by any means; I just thought it didn’t have to be drug out as long as it was.
After reading over Sizer’s study I have come to realize that there is so much more to the secondary education than most of the population probably realizes, including me. Sizer’s way of portraying Mark’s school day is very easy to relate to, and after reading the explanations afterwards, was a piece of learning right before me. In my opinion this is a credible piece of writing because, as a writer Sizer does the expected and catches the reader’s attention in his detailed description of Mark’s day. Allowing that to lead into explanation really is eye opening to others who do not have much understanding of the educational programs set up for today’s youth.
From this writing I have actually learned about the heart of the education and I think it is a very important necessity for every child. To be in a “working environment”, as far as being at school from eight to three, dressing properly, being punctual and prepared, is very helpful for students. It is a practice for the routine that often comes with every individual’s life and to be aware of that is crucial.
Looking back on what I began saying, I’m thankful for the education I’ve been given. Even with the description of the schedule layout, the goals for schools, the conveyer belt way of life, my eyes have now been opened to a different view. It’s really cool and even generous, how much thought and consideration goes into helping one receive an education.
